The Tiller's Folly

The Tiller's Folly brought their special brand of Celtic Canadiana to the Pender Harbour Music School on May 14, 2005. They joined us again in January 2009.

Internationally famous Canadian pianist, Robert Silverman, is a good friend and frequent visitor to Pender Harbour. Here he gets in a little practice. We don't think he really needs it, but...Bob visited us most recently in April 2006 when he performed a 4-concert series called Mad About Mozart.

Canadian Folk icons Valdy and Gary Fjellgaard packed the house in October 2004. Valdy likes to get upclose and personal with the audience members.

A Touch of Brass

In November 2004, these five talented musicians brought us everything from Gabrielli to Gershwin, flawlessly played on trombone, trumpet, tuba, flugelhorn, French horn, and more brassy things. They also made great audience contact, explaining where they find their repertoire and even how some of it came to be written.

These Alberta boys won many audience converts to their "swingin' folk chunk" style of music (which takes inspiration from Django Reinhardt, adds a bit of bebob, and a dash of country swing to make something entirely new) when they tore into Pender Harbour in March of 2005 and again in March 2006. Michael Kaeshammer

Juno Award nominee and multi-West Coast Music Award winner, Michael Kaeshammer, has done two concerts for us in the last few years. He is one of Canada's fastest rising stars and plays boogie woogie piano like there is no tomorrow.

While in Canada for their third appearance at the International Choral Kathaumixw in Powell River, the Christ the King Church Choir from Uganda made a special stop in Pender Harbour. Their energetic singing and dancing style of performance delighted the audience.

Imagine feet-stomping and hand-clapping and people in the audience singing their hearts out, and you'll have an image of what happened at the Pender Harbour Music School when the Circle of Voices brought its very special brand of Gospel music to the Coast.  This music gets into your bones and you wake next morning wondering why you are humming that old favourite. But you know it will linger awhile and that's OK.

Graham Walker has done two kids' concerts for us. He is a well-loved Sunshine coast performer and when Graham tells us he'll be there on Saturday morning and not to put any chairs out, we know the kids are gonna love it!

When the Arrogant Worms hit town, we had to move the whole operation over to the Pender Harbour Community Hall, which could accommodate the 200 plus people who wanted to enjoy their unique combination of satire, quirky humour, and irreverence - all wrapped up in tight vocal harmonies. A night to remember!

When Award-winning Russian-Canadian pianist, Alexander Tselyakov, came to do his first concert for us in April of 2004, he fell in love with Pender Harbour. And the audience fell in love with him. And that's when the idea of a summer Chamber Music Festival was born. We held our first one in 2005. It was a great success, and the rest, as they say, is history. Alexander returned for a solo recital in March 2009.

Penderecki String Quartet

Penderecki String Quartet The Penderecki String Quartet delighted audiences with their friendly and informative stage presence and world-class performance in November of 2003. And they were a hit again at the 2006 Chamber Music Festival.

The Peters Drury Trio

The Peters Drury Trio In Oct. 2003, vocalist Carolyn Drury and brothers Jesse and Graeme Peters brought their unique style of jazz to Pender Harbour and stole the  hearts of everyone in the audience. They truly are Yukon Gold.

Jeff Shucard and Sweet Papa Lowdown brought their unique brand of hot syncopated vocal jazz to Pender Harbour to open our 2005/2006 season.

Sara Davis Buechner

After her continent-wide move from New York city to Vancouver's University of BC, where she teaches music, Sara gave one of her first concerts on the west coast in Pender Harbour in November 2005. She loves both classical and popular repertoire and her performance of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue brought the house down.

Celso Machado

Celso Machado

We were delighted when we heard that internationally known Brazilian guitarist, Celso Machado, had moved to the Coast, so we wasted no time in inviting him to our Performance Centre. Before the night was out, he had several members of the audience playing percussion instruments and together creating the unforgettable sounds of a rainforest downpour. He gave us another concert in May 2007 with his good musical buddies, percussionist Pepe Danza and mandolinist Stan Gubiotti.

When these 5 classically trained trombonists play baroque and classical masterpieces, and then segue into what is for them Canada's real national anthem, the theme from Hocket Night in Canada, you know the Team Canada of Trombones is in town.

A highlight of our 2005/2006 season was a visit from one of Canada's best loved folk singers, Connie Kaldor. Not only did she share some wonderful songs and some hilarious stories, she also had a little family reunion and teamed up with the Pender Harbour Community Choir on her classic, Wood River.

Olam returned to Pender Harbour again in April 2006 and once again showed us how engaging klezmer-based world beat music can be. OY VAY OLAM!

Our 2005/2006 season ended on a high note when Viveza, the premier salon music group in Canada brought us a program of Palm Court Music that entranced the audience and turned our performance centre into an elegant salon, for a Sunday afternoon at least.

This extraordinary quintet is renowned among folk music fans of all ages for their instrumental virtuosity, lush vocal arrangements, exuberant live performances, evocative songwriting, and refreshingly innovative interpretations of traditional tunes from around the globe. The Bills kicked off our 2006/2007 season to a full house of very satisfied fans.

Penny Lang

Another recent addition to the Coast's incredible talent pool, legendary Canadian folk singer Penny Lang now makes her home in Madeira Park. In November 2006, she invited her long time friend Dave Clarke to join her on stage in our intimate performance centre and the night was an unforgettable one. Penny was featured again in May 2009.

One man sitting on a chair with only a guitar - nothing else on our little stage and the audience was spellbound for 2 hours. Daniel Bolshoy charmed us with his incredible performance and warmed up a cold January day in 2007. Daniel returned to us in February 2009.

Paul was so well received at our first Chamber Music Festival that we just had to invite him back in the spring of 2007. With Silvia Fraser on piano, he presented a well crafted program of cello delights.

Our 2008-2009 season began with a spectacular performance by 17-year old Korean violin sensation Jinjoo Cho. MusicFest Vancouver and Windsor Plywood helped us bring this rising young star to Pender Harbour.
