SOJOURNERS TESTIFY
Marcus Mosley, Will Saunders, Khari McLelland and accompanist Lonnie DeLisle sang some seriously spiritual gospel in the Pender Harbour School of Music on January 15. The first in the Music Society's Concert Series for 2012 was standing room only. And the Sojourner's power and sincerity of song and spirit transformed the room into the kind of place of worship many attending wished theirs could be: Sacred.
The Sojourners came together after Jim Byrnes asked Marcus Mosley to bring a couple of friends to do backup vocals on his House of Refuge cd. To the delight of thousands, they have stayed together to perform and inspire. Sunday's songs were from slave days to the 70's, Los Lobos to the Mississippi Sheiks. The harmonies were rich and beautiful, but what made the afternoon so striking was how each Sojourner immersed himself in every song, became completely carried into the melody and lyrics, so that they were, in fact, singing in prayer.
McLelland introduced a Doris Akers' song, 'Lead Me, Guide Me,' as a help for when you
'have one those days when you wonder what you are doing here.' His solo was uplifting and electrifying. All the Sojourners talked about the importance of keeping our hearts open, to youth, people in struggle, and each other, no matter what faith we carry. They spoke about Black History month, coming up in February, and that the civil rights and social justice movements have great relevance in 2012. And they joked about the difference between Gospel and Blues: Gospel:
"Ohhhh Lord!" Blues: "Ohhhh Baby!"
But mostly they sang, beautifully and soulfully: traditional, sacred songs like
'Old Ship of Zion, 'Wade in the Water,' and modern spirituals like
'People Get Ready' by Curtis Mayfield, and 'Peace in the Neighbourhood' by Los Lobos. The audience joined in on some, clapped to many, and the transformation from gospel performance to spiritual gathering became complete. One overheard comment that best summed it up;
"If these guys were at my church, I would go every week!"

The Lafayette String Quartet delighted its audience with two Beethoven quartets, and a challenging Stravinsky work on a sunny Sunday afternoon in mid-October. And then, after asking "How do you follow Beethoven?", they proved they could do so by giving us the finale from a Haydn quartet, proving they really are a tour de force on the Canadian music scene.

We are still basking in memories of the August Chamber Music Festival. With a program featuring world-renowned violinist James Ehnes, BC's own Borealis String Quartet, fiery guitarist Daniel Bolshoy, rising cello star Emmanuelle Beaulieu Bergeron and music director/pianist Alexander Tselyakov, it was a truly exceptional musical experience. Many in the audience commented on how the intimate space of the School of Music in Madeira Park allowed them to see, hear and feel the music in a way not possible in a larger concert hall.
Mark your calendars now for August 17 – 19, 2012.

For those who like the sound of the human voice - just the human voice, no instruments - the Euphorics concert was a night to remember. Tight harmonies and intricate arrangements of pop, jazz, blues, and gospel favourites had the audience clapping and singing along with abandon. They even treated us to their very own history of A Cappella singing, starting with the caveman, moving through Gregorian chant, and ending with very contemporary examples. Local singers are also still talking about the workshop on vocal technique they ran on Sunday afternoon for the Pender Harbour Choir and friends.
