Jim Rotondi LIVE FROM NEW YORK CITY!! School of Music Performance Centre, Friday nightTrumpeter Jim Rotondi began recording and touring with the Ray Charles Orchestra following graduation from university. Next came a six year tenure with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, as well as signing on with organist Charles Earland's quintet. Based in NYC, Jim currently tours with his own group, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Grammy-winner Toshiko Akiyoshi and the collective known as One For All, which features Eric Alexander and Steve Davis. Jim's extensive recording experience most recently includes the release of "Destination Up", for the Sharp Nine label, following the release of four CDs on the Criss Cross Jazz label. He can also be heard on several of Charles Earland's Highnote Records releases. One For All's releases include Sharp Nine Records' "Too Soon To Tell" and "Optimism." Both received critical acclaim from Cadence, JazzTimes, and The Detroit Free Press. Ken Lister joins Jim RotondiKen Lister has been playing jazz bass professionally since 1983. He straddles the Georgia Strait, living, teaching and playing in both Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Ken has extensively toured within Canada and internationally including Australia, the British Isles, Cuba and South America.Ken is a member of the Hugh Fraser Quintet (Juno Award for Best Mainstream Jazz Album, 1997) and VEJI (the Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation). He performs with the legendary jazz guitarist Pat Coleman in his trio, with Juno Award winner Buff Allen on drums, and has recently formed his own sextet that is creating lots of buzz. Throughout his career, he has performed with many great musicians including Slide Hampton, Chucho Valdes, Kenny Wheeler, Joshua Redman, Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, Rob McConnell, Ian McDougall, P.J. Jesse Cahill joins Jim RotondiDrummer Jesse Cahill is a member of the award winning Jodi Proznick Quartet, and will be on stage with Cory Weeds, Jodi, and Jim Rotondi on Friday night at the School of Music.Jesse is respected as one of the foremost drummers on the Vancouver music scene, and has worked with such international greats as David “Fathead” Newman, Bobby Shew, PJ Perry, Jim Byrnes, Long John Baldry and Jack Lavin. Cahill has recorded with CBC Jazz Beat, Phil Dwyer, Jodi Proznick. Cousin Harley, the Brad Turner Quartet, and he has performed at the Vancouver Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Vancouver Island Music Festival and many more. The duo will also perform at The Restaurant, The Painted Boat, Friday evening.Alto saxophonist Dylan Cramer was born in North Vancouver, B.C. on January 21, 1958 He studied alto sax with Sonny Criss, and Phil Sobel in LA, and them moved back to Canada in 1977. He recorded a tribute album to Sonny Criss, and in 2000, Dylan signed on with Nagel Heyer Records from Hamburg, Germany, and has released two critically acclaimed recordings for the label, "All Night Long" and "Bumpin' On Sunset".Along with his recording schedule, Dylan teaches the saxophone full time. Now based in NYC, Laila won both Canadian Composer and Vocalist of the Year, 2005, at the National Jazz Awards. D & the Hot Club of MarsD & the Hot Club of Mars is a direct descendant of The Kitsilano Kat Kickers, one of the first groups to play hot swing around Vancouver, BC, in the late 70s. Having gone through an enormous body of musical alumni since then, the present band still does "Gypsy Jazz", the contemporary name for the genre of music now popular worldwide that was created by Django Reinhardt and his Quintette du Hot Club de France in the 30s and 40s.With a twist. The Aaron Hardie TrioAaron Hardie first picked up the saxophone in his grade seven school band, and has been playing ever since. He has his BA in Jazz Studies from Capilano University, where he studied privately with saxophonists Mike Allen and Stan Karp. During this time, he also held the lead alto chair in the Capilano College "A" Band, under the direction of Brad Turner, where he played with such jazz greats as Kenny Werner, Ian McDougall, and Kurt Elling. He was the 2001 recipient of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Music Education Award for Capilano College.Aaron leads his own trio, dedicated to playing various song forms from the standard jazz repertoire. The trio's voice, with Chris Gestrin on keyboard and Karlis Silins on Bass, is cool, sooth, and melodic, the best qualities of standard jazz. Ken Johnson DuoSmooth standards, a gentle touch, mood, romance. When it comes to performing jazz standards on the keyboard, Ken Johnson does not take himself too seriously. He has fun and he takes you along for the ride. Teamed up with local bassist Boyd Norman, and you are in for a treat - the smooth sounds of recognizable favorite tunes with clever improvisations and sassy rhythms.Since 1999 Ken has performed regularly as a guest artist on Regent Seven Seas Cruise Lines, both in concert and as an evening entertainer For ten years prior to that he performed exclusively for Four Seasons Hotel in Canada, and held the position of Entertainment Director at Minaki Lodge, a Four Seasons Northland Resort. Before that, he performed in a variety of venues in Winnipeg and Toronto, composed and produced music for film, tv and choral groups, and combined that with a career as a music educator and administrator. Although well known as a performer, he is also a composer and lyricist, writing beautiful music in a style that is both jazz and classically influenced. He has released more than a dozen piano cds in the world market, achieving Canadian Platinum status in 1996 for his recording “The Natural Piano”. His critically acclaimed music is heard frequently on airwaves around the world. Ken is currently completing the music and libretto for a dramatic oratorio titled “The Quest', and last year released his Christmas cd “Wintersong” (best of the season). 2008 will see the release of a new cd “Classique”, featuring his solo piano work with special guest performances by soprano Caitlin Bradley. Rumba CalzadaRUMBA CALZADA has been a favorite with Vancouver's Latin Jazz and Salsa enthusiasts for over 15 years. The band performs a powerful blend of Latin Jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms that are; "Guaranteed to move your feet and reach your soul". - Latin Beat Magazine, Los AngelesRaphael Geronimo, percussionist, timbales, vocals, and Calzada's leader, has been an integral part of the Vancouver Latin and Jazz scene for more than ten years, performing, teaching, writing and directing for many of the city's best-loved groups. Third generation in a family of professional musicians and dancers, he committed himself at age seventeen to serious musical studies under the direction of his father Boying Geronimo, and made his professional debut one year later. Tom Keenlyside with Doc FingersTom Keenlyside's musical career has spanned four decades, featuring performances and recordings throughout North America and Europe. Astrid Sars QuintetSinger and sax player Astrid Sars was born and raised in the Netherlands. At a young age Astrid sang in her father's church choirs with her two sisters, and has memories of listening to jazz and Brazilian music with her parents at home.
Now located and performing in Vancouver, Sars' voice has been described as a cross between Sade and Bebel Gilberto, and her band's style an intriguing and sultry blend of Bossa-Jazz-Chill. She has performed and collaborated with many great Canadian and European musicians, and some of her music has been featured in film, documentaries and dance productions. Company B Big BandCompany B, a jazz band in the style of the Andrews and Boswell Sisters, rouses crowds with their light and cheerful arrangements of classic swing era hits. Loaded with personality, the harmonies of the female vocal trio are well-complemented by the traditional jazz rhythm section and horn player(s).Company B Big Band is a light-hearted, hard-swinging group of talented young musicians based out of Vancouver, BC. The group's main attraction is its three harmonizing female singers who perform in the style of classic 1930s and '40s acts like the Andrews Sisters and the Boswell Sisters. The singers are backed by a driving traditional jazz rhythm section and are complimented by up to three horns.
