Gala Opening: Dee Daniels performs in concert at the Community Hall, Friday September 17, 2010 9:00pmDee Daniels is a crowd pleaser and a musician's musician. Whether accompanying her self at the piano, fronting a trio, big band or symphony, she is a unique talent who transcends musical borders when she brings her jazz styling, infused with gospel and blues flavoring, to the stage.Daniels' style was born in her stepfather's church choir in Oakland, California, honed through the R&B era and brought to full fruition during a five-year stay in Europe from 1982 to 1987. During those years, she performed with such 'Legends of Jazz' as Toots Thielemans, Johnny Griffin, Ed Thigpen, and Monty Alexander to name but a few. Two other personal highlights while in Europe included the opportunity of singing the Blues with the late, divine Sarah Vaughan in The Netherlands, and singing Gospel with the late great Joe Williams in Germany. Dee's international career includes performances in eleven African countries, Australia, Colombia, Hong Kong and Japan, as well as in North America and many countries throughout Europe. She has also established herself as a jazz vocalist in demand by the classical music world. She performs her Great Ladies of Swing, and The Soul of Ray: The Music of Ray Charles POPS programs with symphony orchestras across Canada and the USA. A respected vocal clinician and mentor, Dee sincerely believes in sharing her knowledge and experience with young singers/musicians. Her JAZZINIT CD was in the Top Ten CDs of 2007 on several polls. In 2008, she was a recipient of Capilano University's Presidents Service Award. Tony Foster, piano man for Dee DanielsOver the past 10 years, in addition to performing with his own groups, Foster has been featured as asideman numerous times at Vancouver's annual International Jazz Festival in different settings which included live recordings for CBC Radio (CBC Jazz Café). Foster led a septet behind Canadian crooner Kenny Colman at the 2007 edition of the festival on the main stage, before a crowd of thousands. Foster has been fortunate and honored to perform with notable jazz legends as Ernestine Anderson, Red Holloway, Sheila Jordan, Kenny Colman, Dee Daniels, Jeff Hamilton, and Peter Washington.

Ross Taggart, piano man with Dmitry BaevskyPianist Ross Taggart will be on stage with Dmitry Baevsky at our Saturday Night School of Music performance.Taggart has been an important part of the Vancouver jazz scene since 1985. He has performed in Canada, the United States, Europe, and central and South America. He has performed and/or recorded with the Hugh Fraser Quintet, Ian McDougall Sextet, Bill Coon Trio, Jill Townsend Big band, Sharon Minemoto Quintet, Clark Terry, Charles Mcpherson, Lionel Hampton, and many others. Ross studied in New York and Toronto with George Coleman, Clifford Jordan, Don Thompson, and Bernie Senesky. He has released 4 cd's as a band leader, and is a faculty member in the Jazz Studies department, Capilano University, North Vancouver.
Jesse Cahill, drummer for Dmitry BaevskyDrummer Jesse Cahill is a member of the award winning Jodi Proznick Quartet, and will be on stage with Dmitry Baevsky on Saturday night at the School of Music Performance Centre.Jesse is respected as one of the foremost drummers on the Vancouver music scene, and has worked with such international greats as David “Fathead” Newman, Bobby Shew, PJ Perry, Jim Byrnes, Long John Baldry and Jack Lavin. Cahill has recorded with CBC Jazz Beat, Phil Dwyer, Jodi Proznick. Cousin Harley, the Brad Turner Quartet, and he has performed at the Vancouver Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Vancouver Island Music Festival and many more. Ken Lister, bass player with Dmitry BaevskyKen Lister has been playing jazz bass professionally since 1984. He is currently based in the Vancouver and Vancouver Island area, and has extensively toured Canada and elsewhere; including the British Isles, Cuba and South America.Ken is a member of the Hugh Fraser Quintet and VEJI (the Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation). As a member of the Hugh Fraser Quintet, Ken won a Juno Award for the Best Mainstream Jazz Album of 1997. Ken also performs with the legendary jazz guitarist Pat Coleman in his trio, with Juno Award winner Buff Allen on drums. He has performed with many great musicians including Joshua Redman, Slide Hampton, Bob McLaren, Kenny Wheeler, P.J. Perry, Don Thompson, Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, and many others. Among his many influences are Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro, Charles Mingus, and Paul Chambers. Five Alarm Funk - Saturday Night Dance Party!Five Alarm Funk is a Vancouver-based, 13-piece rhythm machine that delivers a delirium-inducing live show fuelled by original funk and afro-beat grooves.The band's wicked cross-rhythms and frenetic, costumed stage show appeals to jazz fans and club kids alike. Five Alarm Funk has carved out a word of mouth fan base from a series of crowd-pleasing performances at clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout Western Canada. Interaction between the crowd and the band is a huge part of the show, and they make every show an event. The band's playful, high-energy live show is fueled by skin-tight arrangements and raw, sweat-drenched passion. From its founding as a six-piece in 2003, the young band (average age is 23) has grown into one of the most exciting and unique groups in Canada. There's a huge afro-beat, Fela Kuti influence, great jazz chops, some James Brown and Kool and the Gang plus a lot of youthful energy and reckless enthusiasm. Nancy Ruth perform's at Motoko's art gallery in Garden BayNancy is from Sidney, British Columbia, Canada where an early love of jazz was ignited by family jam sessions. Travel to Latin America, and residence in Spain revealed her greatest musical passion. Her love of Spanish now infuses much of her work as evident on her latest CD, Me Quedo, for the Home of Jazz label. Nancy continues to compose songs in a personal style encompassing the sounds of flamenco, jazz, and boleros. She's worked with pianist Bob Albanese in New York, studied with pianist Lloyd Abrams in Vancouver, collaborated with composer Toño Robira in Panama, and continues her study of the flamenco guitar with master tocaor Gabriel Cabrera de los Gazules in Spain. In 1998 Nancy released her first CD, the self- titled Nancy Ruth, a critically acclaimed album of her own compositions on the Roca label. Returning to her love of the standard song, she released her second CD, It's Got to Be Love in 2004. The latest CD, Me Quedo, is a mix of original and Latin favourites, on the European label Home of Jazz. Wil Campa y su Gran Union performs at the Painted Boat Resort, Saturday September 18, 12:30pm-2:30pmHis voice will capture and embrace you. The beat of son will make you move.Wil grew up listening to his native Cuban music, and fell in love with Cuban Sonero (soul). Wil was invited by Orlando Valle to join his group, Maraca, as lead vocalist, and in 1988, they toured throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Latin America, hitting Jazz Festivals around the world. This gave Wil the opportunity to perform with Wynton Marsalis, Poncho Sanchez el GRAN COMBO de PUERTO RICO, Natalie Cole, Michael Miller, Jow Lovano, Jovan Hidalgo, Jimmy Bosh, and Jose Alberto el Canario. He has shared the stage with the great Cuban musicians Omara Portuondo, Eliades Ochoa and the renowned Ibrahim Ferrer. Wil performed on three recordings with Maraca. The first CD was Descarga Total(Total Download), the second Tremenda Rumba which in 2002 had an American Grammy nomination, the latest CD Soy Yo (I am), won several awards. Wil is completely dedicated to the Cuban Sonero in his music, and has the heart felt acceptance of the Cuban people. From sold-out concerts in San Francisco to exclusive local club performances, Jennifer's performance experiences have been varied. she has appeared at Jazz Festivals all across Canada, several of the United States, and with such jazz luminaries as: Tommy Banks, Don Thompson, Kenny Wheeler, Skywalk, and Hugh Fraser, to name a few. Jennifer has appeared on Jazzbeat, Westcoast Performance, and CBC's Hot Air several times, and was selected to be featured on four separate CDs produced by the CBC.Jennifer has released several acclaimed CD'S, an is pianist/vocalist for San Francisco-based Novo Tempo, a Brazilian/jazz Fusion group featuring the music of Ed Johnson. His virtuostic and supportive bass playing has been a Canadian treasure for many years on both acoustic and electric basses. He is as gifted on fretless as he is on acoustic - a rarity in the industry. Rene was educated both in Canada and the US. Rene Worst is one of the founding members of the noted fusion band "Skywalk" and has anchored and produced six recordings with them. Astrid Sars Quintet performs at the Grasshopper PubSinger and sax player Astrid Sars was born and raised in the Netherlands. At a young age Astrid sang in her father's church choirs with her two sisters, and has memories of listening to jazz and Brazilian music with her parents at home.
Now located and performing in Vancouver, Sars' voice has been described as a cross between Sade and Bebel Gilberto, and her band's style an intriguing and sultry blend of Bossa-Jazz-Chill. She will be upping the tempo for a great weekend of jazz and dance at the Grasshopper Pub. Sars has performed and collaborated with many great Canadian and European musicians, and some of her music has been featured in film, documentaries and dance productions. Steve Giltrow Quartet performs at the Artisans Craft AffairSteve has written for and played in various ensembles on the Sunshine Coast for the past twenty years. These include solo, duos, trios, quartets and concert bands. He has performed with his quartet on the Gulf Islands at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Vancouver and a number of times at both the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival and Gibsons Jazz Festivals. He has also produced and performed in concerts with Jennifer Scott, Melody Daichun and Juno nominated musicians Karin Plato and Kate Hammet-Vaughan.For the past twenty years Steve has been studying Jazz guitar most notably under the '2009 National Jazz Award Guitarist' Bill Coon. He is in demand as an educator and has been teaching various styles of guitar to students of all ages and levels on the Sunshine Coast for the past twenty years. Steve has recorded a sampler Solos/Duos CD and is now in the process of recording a CD of his original tunes with his quartet. Definitely Diva perform at Millennium ParkLynne Dickson, Wendy Hibberd and Patrice Pollack have be performing together for the past two years. What started as a one time project of three songs has grown into a large and varied repertoire of jazz, swing, blues, latin, light rock and R&B.All 3 divas are well known performers on the Sunshine Coast and have many years of musical experience. Lynne has been sharing music with the Sunshine Coast of BC for many years through her Music Makers Studio, entertaining with her husband Reg, and performing with Blind Date. Wendy has been singing since childhood, performing with many groups including A Capella Strait, The Mellowtones and Blind Date as well as singing solo which truly delights her audience. Patrice sang with After Hours, a well known vocal quartet, in the 1990's. With her great ear for harmony, unique rhythmic sense and bluesy style, she adds a special groove to the repertoire and writes many of the arrangements. Zapato Negro perform at Millennium ParkGlobal Blend of Afro-Caribbean Rhythms & Jazz - featuring musicians from Cuba, Venezuela, and Canada, Zapato Negro has rapidly been building a reputation in Vancouver for it's own blend of Afro-Caribbean rhythms and jazz.Knowing it's not enough to have very talented individuals, Zapato Negro has become a real band through hard work, communication, and weekly rehearsals. An ongoing house gig on Commercial Drive (originally under the name "Machito Square") enabled them to develop an eclectic and exciting concert repertoire that includes originals, underplayed (or unkown) jazz standards done in clave, and classics of Latin Music reworked, reharmonized or re-rhythmicized in jazz. Word spread quickly - especially among musicians - with full houses most weeks. A featured performance/ clinic at the Vancouver International Drum Festival (October 30, 2005), followed by a sold-out performance at the Cellar Jazz Club (where their demo recording was made) has further established Zapato Negro as Vancouver's premier Afro-Cuban Jazz ensemble. Pearl Django performs at Millennium ParkEntering their fifteenth year of performing Pearl Django continues to be one of America's most respected and busiest Hot Club style groups. Though still strongly influenced by the music of Django Reinhardt, Pearl Django's repertoire now includes many original compositions. Their music reaches out across the divides of taste to a wide variety of audiences. The band's fervent followers include Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli fans, guitar enthusiasts (and guitarists!), lovers of string music, including bluegrass devotees, who relish nimble, clean, intricate picking, "world music" fans drawn to French and Gypsy accents, plus jazz buffs and aficionados of the new swing music.
