A celebrated Spanish virtuoso of the flamenco guitar, Martin has been voted one of the top three guitarists in the world, (Guitar Magazine). “He has a terrifyingly good technique, and an absolute dominance of the guitar,” raved El Mundo. He has played with Miles Davis, Herby Hancock, and Stevie Ray Vaughn, and was the first flamenco artist to record with the London Philharmonic. Juan will be bringing a dancer and singer from Spain to this concert, which promises to be both exciting and exceptional.

A trio of Canada's most versatile chamber musicians has joined forces to create TRYPTYK. Violinist Joan Blackman, cellist Eric Wilson, and pianist Jane Hayes are each acclaimed musicians in their own right on national and international stages, as soloists and in chamber groups. Their coming together as Tryptyk provides the perfect opportunity to concentrate on their common love of chamber music and the piano trio repertoire. They play with 'rare beauty, variety and power,' according to the Winnipeg Free Press.  We are delighted to offer an afternoon with Joan Blackman, Eric Wilson and Jane Hayes: TRYPTYK.

Blues legend Jim Byrnes returns to the Sunshine Coast after winning the 2007 Juno for Best Gospel CD for “House of Refuge.” This will be an intimate, acoustic evening of gospel and blues that speak of sin and redemption, some traditional, some written by Byrnes, all delivered in that whiskey voice that has become his trademark.  We are pleased to welcome Jim Byrnes back to Pender Harbour.

Pianist Pavel Egorov, winner of the Gold Medal and First Prize in the International Schumann competition, tours in Russia and abroad, conducting master classes, and judging international piano competitions. He has recorded over 50 programs of solo, chamber, and orchestra performances, including music by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schumann and many others. We are delighted to welcome Professor Egorov to Pender Harbour.

A quartet of very talented string musicians, Van Django is inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grapelli's 1930's gypsy jazz group "Quintet Of The Hot Club Of France". With skill, zest, and humour Van Django weave their magic, combining the rich gypsy tradition with their many diverse musical influences.The lads are forging an original westcoast sound, featuring virtuosic solos, bouncy rhythm, witty arrangements and an infectious sense of fun! May brings the Afro-Cuban rhythms of Zapato Negro to Pender Harbour. Zapato Negro is Gilberto Moreaux, one of Cuba's foremost drummers/timbaleros; Miguelito Valdes on trumpet, who has played with many of Cuba's top performers, including Omara Portuondo of Buena Vista Social Club fame; Montreal born and Caracas raised Andre Carrasquero, pianist/composer, whose “Todo Brasil” won top honours as best independent production; and composer/bassist Allan Johnston, known in Vancouver for his association with the finest local Latin ensembles. Hot sounds for spring!

The Coast Jazz Quintet, founded by violinist/trumpet player Blaine Dunaway, was created in 2006 in a meeting of like minds, all sharing a love for improvisation and jazz.  Incorporating the harmonic intricacy of Bill Evans' and various funk, latin and swing grooves, the band blends original compositions and a repertoire of tunes by jazz greats such as Chick Corea, Bill Evans and Jaco Pastorius, to name a few.  With internationally recognized musicians Blaine Dunaway on violin and trumpet, Graham Ord on sax and flute, John Toulson on basses, Anna Lumiere on piano and Jim McGillveray on drums, this band is sure to keep your feet tapping while taking you on an improvisational journey of no return....
